Cancellation of Debts Due to Total and Permanent Disability or Death

Total and Permanent Disability

If you are totally and permanently disabled, you may quality for a total and permanent disability (TPD) discharge of your federal student loans or TEACH Grant service obligation. If you receive a TPD discharge, you will no longer be required to repay your loans or complete your TEACH Grant service obligation.

*Beginning 7/1/2013, borrowers seeking a discharge based on total and permanent disability will apply directly to the Department of Education Nelnet Total and Permanent Disability Servicer. Their website is www.disabilitydischarge.com 

Death

In the event of the borrower's death Student Loan Collections requires a death certificate (original or copy) in order to cancel all debts held by the department.
